A great first week!

What a great first week! The weather was just right. The smiles were beaming. And everyone seems ready for the amazing year that is unfolding in front of us. Much of this week in library we focused on remembering that the library belongs to all of us. To highlight this, along with promoting a love for books, we read Red Knit Cap Girl and the Reading Tree by Naoko Stoop.

In the story, Squirrel finds a hollowed out tree that quickly turns into a place where the woodland animals keep their books for others to borrow. Those that don't have books to share find other ways to contribute, until what was once a hollowed old oak tree turns into a beautiful library, reminiscent of those "Free Little Libraries" that are popping up around the world.

We used the story as an opportunity to discuss what makes a library so great and how we all need to work together to make it a space for everyone to feel comfortable to learn and share and grow...and remember this includes whole families too!  Please try to remember what day library day is so students get in the habit of bringing back library books on time for others to enjoy.

Red Knit Cap Girl sums up the story by saying "it is good to share books." I think this first week full of retellings of summer adventure, welcome back smiles and hugs, and coming back as a school community is proof that we have more than just books to share and that is what makes a library and school so great.
