ALA Book Award Winners

The American Library Association Youth Media Awards were announced in Philadelphia today to much delight of readers everywhere. These awards acknowledge the best of the best in children’s and young adult literature. Among the announcements are the winners of the Caldecott Award, given to the best illustrations in a children’s picture book and the Newbery Medal, given to the most distinguished written work in children’s literature.

This year’s Caldecott winner is “Locomotive,” illustrated and written by Brian Floca. Three Caldecott Honor Books were also named. They are “Journey,” written and illustrated by Aaron Becker; “Flora and the Flamingo,” written and illustrated by Molly Idle; and “Mr. Wuffles!” written and illustrated by David Wiesner.

This year’s Newbery Medal went to “Flora & Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures,” written by Kate DiCamillo. Four Newbery Honor Books also were named. They are “Doll Bones,” written by Holly Black; “The Year of Billy Miller,” written by Kevin Henkes; “One Came Home,” written by Amy Timberlake; and “Paperboy,” written by Vince Vawter.
